Trip overview

This trip takes us around Hjørundfjord, a 33 km long arm of Storfjorden on Norway's west coast, surrounded on three sides by the majestic Sunnmøre Alps. We’ll summit some of the region’s classic ski touring peaks such as Slogen, Blåbretind (Blue Glacier Peak) and Skårasalen, rising to over 1500 m direct from the fjord. If you're looking for a trip that combines great summit to sea skiing with a quintessentially Norwegian cultural experience, and you want to "ski where no man has skied before" (almost) then join us on this truly pioneering ski adventure.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Ålesund

The trip begins and ends in Ålesund, a picturesque trading port rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style after the great fire of 1904. We stay one night here giving you the chance to explore the harbour, winding lanes and hilltop viewpoints over the town and open sea

Accommodation:
Hotel Brosundet. A restored fishing warehouse in the heart of Ålesund

Day 2: Ålesund to Trandal

After transferring by private vehicle from Ålesund to Hundeidvik we'll start skinning and cover about 13 km ascending 1200 m. If conditions allow, we'll summit Blåbretinden (Blue Glacier Peak) and may need to use crampons, ice axes and ropes just under the summit. From Blåbretind (1476 m), we make our way down to the roadless town of Trandal (population 6).

Accommodation:

Christian Gard. Despite the fact that Trandal only has a handful of residents, the Christian Gard pub is a popular place and most likely fresh fish from the fjord will be served for dinner.

Day 3: Råna to Urke

We start the day early and head through the Lissjedalen valley towards the summit of Råna (1586 m). While some parts of today's leg are steep and demanding we'll be rewarded with some spectacular views. After 1500 m ascending we'll summit Råna before enjoying the thrill of skiing down again those well earned 1500 m to Urke before we have a short transfer to the hotel.

Accommodation:

The hotel Union Øye, in the village of Øye by the Norangsfjord has been charming visitors since 1891 and can count Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Keiser Wilhelm II amongst its many distinguished guests. The hotel, they say, is haunted by a girl called Linda whose crying can be heard in the hotel's Blue Room

Day 4: Slogen to Villa Norangdal

Our goal today is the majestic Slogen, a veritable classic in the Sunnmøre Alps, rising over 1564 m direct from the fjord and on clear days offering spectacular views across the entire range and as far as Ålesund. From here, we’ll ski all the way down to Norangsdalen, described by William C Slingsby, the 19th century English pioneer of mountaineering in Norway, as the most dramatic alpine valley he had ever seen.

Accommodation:

Tonight it's ski in ski out! We will spend the night at Villa Norangdal. A beautifully restored Swiss chalet style boutique hotel where each room is dedicated to iconic design decades of the 20th century. Tonight we can relax in the outdoor jacuzzi with a cold beer in hand, the snow capped peaks in view and with clear skies the Milky Way above us.

Day 5: Over Blæja and Kårdalstindane

We start skinning direct from the hotel steps and head towards Blæja and Kårdalstindane. If conditions are clear, we will again be able to see across large parts of Hjørundfjorden and all the way to open sea. Wonderful skiing down Kårdalen and to the fjord.

Accommodation:
We will spend the night in a more basic accommodation at Hjørundfjord Vandrerhjem Bjørke, deep in Hjørundfjorden.

Accommodation:
We will stay the night at Sagafjord Hote, situated on the water’s edge. Another beautiful hotel with wooden traditional buildings transported here from the Valdres region and reassembled log by log.
