Trip overview

This Basecamp trip will explore the relatively unknown Romsdal region of Western Norway. A region best known for Trollvegen (Troll Wall) the highest vertical rock face in Europe and Trollstigen (Troll ladder) the snaking mountain pass with its 11 hairpin bends and stunning new viewing platform forming part of the Geiranger – Trollstigen National Tourist Road. After the summer tourists have gone home the region puts on its white cloak and transforms into a ski touring paradise known only to Norwegians and those few adventurous souls that travel here from all corners of the globe to ski its epic lines.

The mountains here rise dramatically and abruptly from flat river valleys giving the area a distinct alpine feel. The ski touring, like in most parts of Norway, is varied from relatively slack open flanks to steep challenging faces and gullies with height differentials between 1000m and 1500m.  Our guide will find just the right mix of trip length, difficulty and of course great skiing to suit the groups wishes and condition. Each night we’ll return to the hotel for some great home cooking in truly charming surroundings indoors and truly epic surroundings outdoors. After a long day out on the mountains what’s better than a cold drink in a warm sauna followed by a camp fire gazing at the night sky and, if we are very lucky, a fleeting glimpse of the Northern Lights which are not uncommon at this latitude.

Day 2 - 6

These days will be spent exploring the mountains of Romsdal and the surrounding areas of Skorgedalen, Isfjorden, Innfjorden and Måndalen. Each night our guide will use his local knowledge and fellow guide network to hunt out where the best skiing can be had the following day. Most likely we will top out on a summit each day, take in some spectacular sea and fjord views before enjoying anywhere between 1000 m and 1500 m of vertical descent back to sea level. The evenings will be spent relaxing in the hotel, enjoying good food, good company and planning the next day’s adventure.
