Trip overview

This Basecamp trip will explore the fabulous Sogn region of Western Norway. A region National Geographic named as the world’s best holiday destination. Staying in the same place each night, we’ll go out on day trips looking for the best snow and the best summit to top out on. Weather permitting most days efforts will be rewarded with spectacular mountain and fjord views and on the descents, some of the best snow conditions you’ll ever experience. On returning to the hotel we’ll have time to shower and relax with a drink before enjoying dinner in the restaurant overlooking the fjord.

What to expect

On this trip you should be comfortable carrying a ski touring day-pack and skinning for several hours. There is likely to be mixed snow conditions on sun exposed or wind blown areas and you should be comfortable skiing through forested slopes. Our guides will adjust the itinerary according to conditions and the group’s wishes. (see typical day below). This is a trip for those appreciating their creature comforts after a great day’s skiing.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Transport from Sogndal airport to Fjærland Fjordstove Hotel where dinner will be served.

Day 2

Traditional Norwegian breakfast buffet

11:00: Meet up with guide at the hotel who will explain the program for the week and go through an equipment check. Short ski trip

Skiing: Togga (1205 m)

Day 3 - 7 (typical day)

09:00: Pick up by the guide at the hotel

10:00: Skiing: Around Sogndal, Jostedalen and Fjærland

  • Grøndalseggi (1423 m)
  • Frudalshesten (1535 m)
  • Vangsen (1757 m)
  • Rohhesten (1216 m)
  • Ryssbotnrana (1604 m)

16:00: Return to vehicle
17:00: Return to hotel to freshen up and relax with a drink before dinner. Plan tomorrow’s trip options.
19:00: 3-course dinner in the hotel overlooking Fjærlandsfjord

Day 8

Day of departure. Transfer to airport.

Rest day

We have one rest day on this basecamp which we will do our upmost to avoid being on a great skiing day. On the rest day we'll be happy to arrange other activities such as:

·       Boat trip on Sognefjorden

·       Kayaking on Sognefjorden

·       Skiing in Sogndal Skisenter

·       Visit to Urnes or Kaupanger Stave Church

Fjærland Fjordstove Hotel

The Fjærland Fjordstove Hotel is a small white wooden hotel built in 1937 situated on the shores of Fjærlandsfjord, an arm of the mighty Sognefjord. The hotel itself is renowned for it's great local cuisine and charming atmosphere. Waking up and drawing back the curtains each morning from one of the fjord view bedrooms reveals majestic snow covered peaks rising 1500 m straight out of the fjord.

We recommend you arrive and depart from Sogndal airport, Oslo airport or Bergen airport.

From Bergen we can arrange a place on the express boat to Sogndal (5 hours) and pick you up on the quayside. A fjord cruise to start your skiing week!
